Welcome to Legal Empowerment Alliance - LEA

LEA is an alliance of women lawyers and leaders working to equip women with the knowledge, skills, and resources to understand, assert and defend their legal rights, overcoming barriers like discrimination, economic constraints, and weak legal systems. LEA’s work moves beyond legal aid to include legal literacy, ensuring women can navigate, challenge injustices and actively participate in legal, economic, and social spheres.

Legal Rights for Women

a) Equality and Non-Discrimination- Women are entitled to equal status, protection and rights under the law including the right to vote, hold public office and sign contracts.

b) Protection Against Violence-Rights include freedom from domestic violence, sexual assault and harassment. This often includes specific, confidential procedures for recording statements in cases of sexual assault.

c) Property and Inheritance-Women have the right to own, manage and inherit property independently, preventing unjust loss of assets through marriage or tradition.

d) Reproductive and Health Rights-These include the right to make decisions regarding their own body and reproduction, including access to abortion and healthcare services.

e) Workplace Rights-Rights include equal pay for equal work, fair wages, protection against discrimination and in many jurisdictions, maternity benefits, such as paid leave.

f) Family Law Equality-Rights within marriage, divorce and child custody, including the prohibition of child marriage.

g) Access to Justice-The right to free legal aid, legal representation and equal access to judicial services.

Our Strategies

  • Legal Literacy and Education- We educate women on their rights regarding property, marriage and work to combat misinformation and marginalization.
  • Access to Justice- We ensure that women have the ability to use legal services, such as legal aid, representation and in some cases, formal, informal or alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
  • Economic Rights Enforcement- We work to secure land, property and inheritance rights which are crucial for women's economic independence and stability.
  • Structural Reforms- We implement legal, policy and institutional reforms to remove gender-based discriminatory laws and ensure enforcement.
  • Overcoming Marginalization- We address deep-rooted cultural and social norms that restrict women's rights and agency.
